Z's drop decision in Rapid City

Leighton Freeze had a good game

The evening started well for the WESTCO Zephyrs but ended with a loss at Rapid City Wednesday night, 15-5.

The Zephyrs jumped out to a 4-0 after one and a half innings, but then the roof caved in on Mark Moran's crew. The host Hardhats came back to tie the game with a four-run bottom of the second. They took the lead, 6-4, with a two-run second, then slammed the door on the Zephyrs with a five run fourth.

One of the keys for Rapid City Post 22 was getting their lead-off hitter aboard. They did so in the first five innings and in six of the eight frames for the night.

"We got off to a good start," said Zephyr coach Mark Moran. "But then they jumped on us and we didn't compete very well."

The Zephyrs were able to erase a lead-off walk to the Hardhats in the bottom of the first with a double play, but the next three innings the hosts were able to get lead-off triples each inning. In the bottom of the eighth Post 22 wrapped up the game early with a lead-off walk followed by a two-run home run.

Eric Moreno and Leighton Freeze each had three hit games in a losing cause for the Zephyrs, an after a three-hit game at Gillette on Tuesday, Ty Benson followed it up with two more hits Wednesday.

The Zephyrs will try to rebound with their Fireworks Unlimited game Thursday at Cleveland Field in Scottsbluff. They will host a Sidney team that downed the Z's 2-1 earlier in the season at Sidney. It will be an Express-Zephyr doubleheader that starts at 5:00 p.m.
