Zephyrs split doubleheader

Joe Moran

The WESTCO Zephyrs rebounded in game two of a doubleheader at Bellevue East Monday to register a split of the two games.

Mark Moran's crew was held to four hits in the opener while falling 5-2. However, in the nightcap the Zephyrs pounded out 13 hits en route to a 15-3 win.

Eric Moreno suffered the loss in the opener even though he surrendered just hits and struck out eight in six innings. He was hurt by a couple of WESTCO errors that allowed three Bellevue East to jump out to a 3-0 after three innings.

The Zephyrs scored a run in the fourth, but East came back an added single tallies in the fifth and sixth to open up a 5-1 lead. The Z's scored one in the top of the seventh.

In game two Joe Sanchez fired a five hitter. He got plenty of support from his teammates. The Zephyrs struck for three runs in both the first and sixth innings. That put the team up 7-0. Bellevue East tallied three in the bottom of the sixth to narrow the margin to 7-3, but an eight run top of the seventh put the game away for WESTCO.

Joe Moran led the offense for the Z's, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Ty Dunkel and Ty Wilson added two hits apiece.

WESTCO is now 21-12 on the year. They will play at North Platte tonight.
