Westphal(No. 33) celebrating a basketball championship

Former Scottsbluff Bearcat Morgan Westphal signed a national letter-of-intent Friday to play volleyball at North Carolina Pembroke, a Division II school in the southeastern part of the state.

Westphal transferred to Northwest High School in Grand Island after her junior year at Scottsbluff. She helped lead the Vikings to the 2012 Class B state championship after the school had settled for second the previous five seasons.

Westphal was also started on the the basketball team that won the Class B state title this past season.

She is headed to a school that finished 5-26 this past season. UNC-Pembroke Braves is located in a town of around of around 3,200 residents, which 89-percent are Native American and members of the Lumbee Tribe. The community is about two hours east of Charlotte.
