Chadron State swept in close match
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. Â– Colorado Mesa University's Christian Otzen had 13 kills and four of her teammates had at least five more to lead the Mavericks past Chadron State, 25-23, 29-27, 25-23 in their Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference match Friday at Brownson Arena.
Although Mesa, now 12-3 overall and 6-1 in the conference, swept all three sets, the match was close. In the first set alone, the two teams were tied 13 times and the lead changed hands five times.
The entire match featured 28 ties and 10 lead changes.
Chadron State (3-13, 1-6 RMAC) will play at Fort Lewis today (Saturday). First serve is set for 6 p.m.
While Otzen was the only Maverick attacker to finish with double-digit kills, she had plenty of help. Rachael Beaty and Kelly Regimbal each had seven, Haleigh Higgins had six and Jordyn Moody finished with five.
Both teams had nearly identical hitting percentages. The Mavs hit .129 and Chadron State hit .128. However, the Mavs finished with 45 total kills compared to 35 for the Eagles.
Erika Roybal and Mallory Irvine each finished with nine kills apiece to lead Chadron State's offense. Mollie Jones added eight more and Jessica Jester finished with five.
The Eagles did play well at the net. Irvine finished with a match-high five assisted blocks and Lexi Hoagland chipped in more. As a team, CSC had 15 total blocks compared to nine for Mesa.
Also for Chadron State, Ashley Bargen had 15 digs and Justine Ackie had 16 set assists.
