Chadron outscores Gering girls

The visiting Chadron Cardinals stumbled through the first quarter at Gering Friday night, but a second quarter explosion helped carry the Cardinals to a 49-29 win against the stubborn Bulldogs.

The 13-1 visitors, second ranked in the state in Class C1, led only 4-2 at the end of the opening period but used a 21-9 spurt in the second stanza to take control against Gering which dropped to 7-7 on the season.

Junior guard Peyton Hinn led the Chadron charge. She scored eight of her game high 15 points in the second quarter. The teams leading scorer, junior Ashlea Kerr, was held to four first half points, but helped the Cardinals extend their lead by nine through the third quarter with seven of her 13 game points right after halftime.

Gering kept playing hard, outscoring Chadron 12-to-11 in the final period. Megan Upp scored four of her Bulldog high nine points in the quarter and was named the KNEB Taco John's Player of the Game.
