Cougars to host Fall Softball Classic
The Western Nebraska Community College softball team will be holding its annual Fall Softball Classic this weekend as six teams will make partake in the 2-day event.
Teams competing in the tournament alongside WNCC will be Chadron State College, the University of Wyoming, North Platte Community College, Northeastern Junior College and the Utah Thunder.
Action in the tournament will kick off Saturday, Sept. 15 when WNCC takes on the Utah Thunder at 9:30 a.m. The Cougars will also face Northeastern Junior College at 6:15 p.m. on Saturday.All games will be played at Volunteer Field in Scottsbluff. Volunteer Field is located behind Cleveland Field on West 20th street.
Other games on Saturday include Chadron State facing the Utah Thunder at 11:15 a.m., Chadron State meeting North Platte at 1 p.m., Utah Thunder taking on North Platte at 2:45 p.m., and North Platte facing Northeastern at 4:30 p.m.
Sunday's action has the Cougars facing Wyoming at 9:30 a.m. and Chadron State at 4:30 p.m. Other games on Sunday pit Wyoming against Chadron State at 11:15 a.m., Northeastern JC against Chadron State at 1 p.m., and Northeastern JC against Wyoming at 2:45 p.m.
The WNCC softball team returns six players back from last year's Region IX championship team in Bianca Duran, Kayla Romey, Kimmie Widick, Danielle Hearn, Kasey Cash, and Mariah Shepherd. The Cougars also have sophomore transfer Madison Spencer, a Gering High graduate on the team this year. Spencer transferred to WNCC from NJC.
Other local players that will be back in Scottsbluff this weekend for the WNCC Fall Classic include Gering's Morgan Hernandez, who plays for NJC, and Chadron's Nikki Ritzen, who is a senior for the Eagles.
