CSC volleyball at home this weekend

CHADRON – After playing 13 matches on the road during the first month of the season, the Chadron State College volleyball team will finally have a pair of home matches this weekend.

The Eagles will entertain Colorado Christian at 7 p.m. on Friday and Colorado Mines at 5 p.m. on Saturday in Armstrong Gymnasium.

Colorado Christian is 10-4 for the season and 1-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

The Cougars have beaten Regis, which was ranked No. 18 in NCAA Division II at the time, but lost to Colorado Mines, Metro State and Colorado Christian in league play.

The team's top attackers are freshmen Summer Greager and Taylor Sturms, who have 158 and 157 kills, respectively. There are just one junior and one senior on the Cougars' roster.

Colorado Mines is 9-4 for the season and 3-1 in the conference, and is ranked 16th this week after defeating Regis and Metro State, which was 10th at the time, last weekend. The Orediggers also have defeated Christian, but lost to UCCS.

All three of the RMAC Players of the Week this week are Orediggers. Jackie Stabell, a 6-foot senior, was the Offensive Player of the Week after accumulating 32 kills in the two matches; Melanie Wannamaker, a 6-1 junior, received the defensive award after making 12 blocks in the matches; and Danielle Johnson-Hazelwood, a 5-9 freshman, earned the setter award for handing out 91 assists.

All three of the award winners are from Texas.

The Eagles are 3-10 overall record and 1-3 in the RMAC, but have become a formidable opponent. In recent action, they defeated Black Hills State and won a set against both UCCS and Wayne State.

CSC has played ranked foes in three of its last five matches and has taken a set from two of them. In fact, the Eagles have played four consecutive four-set matches and are 3-6 in them during the season.

In 2011, Chadron State only played in eight four-set matches the entire season.

Mallory Irvine is pacing the CSC attack with 125 kills and a whopping hitting percentage of .246. She also has a team-high 50 blocks.
