Class A & D first round consolations done

The first round of consolations are in the books in Omaha at the State Wrestling Championships at the Century Link Center for Classes A and D.

For Bayard, it was a good round, with three of the five wrestlers in that round picking up wins. Brandon Bowers was a 19-2 technical fall winner over Andrew Fangman of Elgin Public-Pope John at 132. Kyler Sides pinned KC DePhillips of Overton in 2:57 at 138. Lane Kizzire was a 9-6 winner over Ty Conterez of Medicine Valley at 145.

The only losses for Bayard were at 120, where Robert Niezwaag was pinned by Aaron Hueftle of Eustis-Farnam in 3:20, and, at 182, where Austin Willey fell to Quintin Chancellor of Medicine Valley 10-3.

The three winners, as well as Trenton Applegate at 152, Tristan Hunter at 170, and Chris Wurn at 285 will wrestle in the second round of consolations under way now. Bayard also has two wrestlers, Allen Denton at 160 and Tanner Willey at 195 who are in the semifinals tonight.

Morrill didn't fare as well in the round, as only Garret Zwiebel won by a pin at 3:54 over Erik Linemann at 138. Matthew Unrein at 132, Elvariste Gomez at 145, and Jackson Carpenter at 160 were all defeated in their first round consolation matches.

Zwiebel, as well as CJ Sidrow at 106 and Matthew Hessler at 285 will wrestle in the second round consolations this morning. Those are the only three Morrill wrestlers left in the tourney.

For Banner County, the only two wrestlers in the consolations were pinned in the round, with both Garred Krakow at 182 and Thomas Grubbs at 195 falling. David Gifford is in the semifinals for Banner County at 220.

Finally, Hay Springs had only one wrestler in the round, as Jordan Houser was pinned in 36 seconds at 170. Chris Ray at 120, Levi Ray at 126, and Joey Johnson at 132 will wrestle in the second round of consolations and Stevin Horrocks at 220 will wrestle in the semifinals tonight.
