McCook rally ends Gering season
Gering had seventh inning magic to win its first elimination game of the day against Cozad at the District B6 Softball Tournament in North Platte Friday, but the final inning magic belonged to second seeded McCook in Gering's second game.
The Lady Bison scored three times in the top of the seventh to overcome a two run deficit and top Gering 10-9. The loss ended Gering's season at 20-9. McCook now to has to beat North Platte twice to win the district title. North Platte has already beaten the Lady Bison once on Friday.
It looked like it might be a battle of the Bulldogs in the title round as Gering exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fifth to overcome a 7-3 deficit and take a 9-7 lead.
McCook was able to put together three singles, an error an a wild pitch to score three runs in the seventh. What proved to the winning run scored on the wild pitch.
The Bulldogs tried to battle back in the bottom half of the inning. Mikayla Butler led off with a double and then was sacrificed to third but was left stranded there as the next two batters were retired.
Gering, who scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh in its first game of the day against Cozad to pull out a 7-6 win, did one better against McCook. They sent 10 batters to the plate in the bottom of the fifth. Butler, who suffered the loss in the circle for Gering, had the big blow with a three-run home run. Haylee Duyck followed later with a two-run single.
McCook took an early 4-0 lead in the top of the first, thanks in part to a three-run homer by Maddie Elder. Gering came back with two runs of their own on rbi hits by Brooke Doggett and Alexa Longoria.
The Lady Bison put five hits together for three more runs in the fourth inning. The Bulldogs countered with one run in the bottom of the inning on a Kylee Bohnsack base hit.
Gering ended up 3-2 at the district tournament and 20-9 overall. McCook is now 18-12 and will play 23-7 North Platte in the championship round.
