Bearcats win district golf title

The Scottsbluff Bearcats are returning to the Class B Boys State Golf Tournament, this year as B4 District champions.

The Cats returned to the top spot in the district for the third time in four years Monday by shooting a 299 to beat defending district champ McCook 299 to 315.

Holdrege finished third in the 12 team field with a 339. The top three teams and 10-individuals plus ties earn a trip to state.

Head coach Mike Klein was pleased with the Bearcats effort. "The guys played well," he said. "We'll just keeping working at our games and see what happens at state next week."

Senior Andrew Holloway led the way for Scottsbluff. He was the meet medalist with a four-under par 68.

"It went pretty well for me today," he said. "I made some putts and hit some good shots."

It was Holloway's third district title individually in the last four years. He also won the crown as a freshman and sophomore. "They have all been special," he said. "But this one might be a little bit more special because it came at home."

Overall the Cats had four players finish in the top ten. Senior Michael Hadden was fourth with a 76. Koy Potthoff was 7th with a 77 and Jonah Wright finished 8th with a 78.

Curtis Welsch rounded out the Bearcat team today. He has missed some of the golf season with mono, but played today using a cart, with the permission of the NSAA, and shot an 84.

McCook had three players in the top five. Sean Backer was second with a 75. Noah Hoffman was third with a 76 and Mack Alspaugh finished fifth, also with a 76.

Holdrege secured the third team spot thanks in part to a 79 by Marcus Van Eperen, which placed him ninth.

Taylor Barton of Sidney earned a trip to state with a sixth place 77 and rounding out the top ten were Marcus Miller of Broken Bow and Nick Maser of Alliance both had 80's.

Gering was 10th in the 12 team field with a 374. They were led Monday by Austin Kaufman who shot an 85.

The Class B state tournament will be played next Tuesday and Wednesday at Jackrabbit Run Golf Course in Grand Island.
