McCook and Scottsbluff battling for top spot
In their attempt to win a second straight Class B Boys State Track and Field Championship Scottsbluff lost its hold on first place at this years meet Saturday morning.
District foe McCook, with wins in the 400 relay and from Kyle Stewart in the pole vault, took a 34-31 lead over the Bearcats.
However, Scottsbluff didn't let that lead last too long. Matt Klein got the lead back for the Cats with a third place finish in the 110 hurdles. That has the Cats leading over the Bison 37-34.
There are six events left on the track and two in the field.
Alliance's Trevor Kamerzell nipped Klein for second in the hurdles. Meanwhile another area performer had to settle for second in a hurdles final.
Hemingford's Kelsy Wood, who had the fastest qualifying time in the Class C 100 hurdles ended up second in the finals. Wood's time of 14.91 was just off the Class C state record of 14.79, but Kearney Catholic's Kalyn Brannagan uncorked a new state record time of 14.65 to win the event.
Scottsbluff's Chesney Walker ended up fifth in the Class B girls 100 hurdle finals.
In the field Sidney's Lucas Rosenbaum tied for third in the pole vault. Nick Smith of Alliance was 11th.
In the girls Class D triple jump Michaela Metcalf of Hay Springs was 23rd.
