Gering goes 1-2 Saturday
After spending Friday at the College World Series in Omaha the Gering Platte Valley Companies senior legion baseball team returned to Crete to resume tournament action.
Gering now sits 1-3 at the tournament after a 1-2 showing Saturday. Doug Jones' crew opened with an 8-7 win against Pleasant Dale in a game that was postponed by rain from Thursday.
The contest was a seesaw battle. Pleasant Dale took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, but Gering battled back with single runs in the first and second. They took the lead, 4-3, with two runs in the third.
Pleasant Dale wasn't done though. They scored two in the sixth and one more in the seventh to take a 6-5 lead into the bottom of the seventh. Gering though was able to push two runs across in the bottom of the final frame to win the game.
Nate Marquez and Brett Orozco led the Platte Valley Companies assault at the plate with three hits apiece.
Marquez also pitched into the seventh, but gave away to Colin Chatterton who recorded the final two outs of the inning and got credit for the win.
Elkhorn Mount Michael won the second game, downing Platte Valley Companies 4-1. Mount Michael led 2-1 after the first inning an added single runs in the fourth and sixth to round out the scoring.
Danny O'Boyle went the distance and suffered the loss. Grant Rimington and Walker Britsch had two hits each for PVC.
A third game was played against Gretna. It was listed as an exhibition game. Gretna won it 7-4. Rimington had another good game at the plate, knocking in two runs, but he also went the distance on the hill and suffered the loss.
O'Boyle and Orozco had two hits each for Gering, who fell behind 3-1 after three innings. Gretna put the game away with a three-run 5th that made the score 7-2.
Gering's record, counting the Gretna game, stands at 13-11.
