Scottsbluff leads area teams heading to day two of state wrestling

District B4 wrestling champ Scottsbluff is making a charge towards a state championship after one day of competition at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha.

Scottsbluff has five of its seven wrestlers moving on to the semifinals Friday night after a perfect quarterfinal round Thursday.

The Cats sit in third in the team standings with 45 points. They are just a point and a half behind second place Plattsmouth and seven and a half points behind defending Class B state champ Omaha Skutt. Skutt won 13 titles in a row from 1998-through-2010.

Leading the way for the Bearcats is two-time defending state champ Colton Adams. The 132-pounder pinned both of his opponents Thursday. He is joined in the semifinals by 106-pounder Juan Delacruz, Keegan Hessler at 113, Joseph Flores-Ybarra at 120 and Andrew Aratani at 285.

Alliance also had a perfect quarterfinal round in Class B. The Bulldogs went four-for-four in the second round. Devin Ushio at 120, Walker Johnson at 126, 152- pounder Tyson Dowler and Dawson Johnson at 160 all advanced to the semifinals. With two wins Thursday Dowler moved his record to 27-0.

One other Class B area wrestler also remained unbeaten Thursday. Chadron 170-pounder Chance Bila is now 37-0. He is joined in the semifinals by teammate Colby Riesen at 160.

Gering did not advance any of its four wrestlers past the second round. Baily Hort at 113 was the only Bulldog to register a first round win.

Mitchell and Bridgeport each have one wrestler in the semifinals. The Tigers send 170-pounder Brendan Swanson to the mats tonight. He had a big quarterfinal win, knocking off an opponent that entered the match 34-1. Swanson is 22-5.

Brandon Nichols of Bridgeport recorded a pin in the first round and an 11-8 quarterfinal win to move on.

In Class D Bayard advanced two of its 10 qualifiers to the semifinals. Allen Denton at 160 and Tanner Willey at 195 are the two. Banner County advanced David Gifford to the semi's at 220 and Stevin Horrocks of Hay Springs also advanced to Friday nights semifinals at 220.

Class A and D first and second round consolation matches get things started in Omaha Friday at 8:30 MT. B and C first and second round consolation matches follow at 11:30. The semifinals and third round consolation matches will start at 4:00 MT.
