Sidney evens season series with Gering
A 3-0 lead after two innings did not hold up for Gering Platte Valley Companies Tuesday night at Oregon Trail Park. Visiting Sidney used a five run third to propel them to an 11-5 win over Gering, evening the season series between the two teams at two games apiece.
Gering jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Dillon DeMott struck out to the start the inning, but reached first on a wild pitch on the third strike. Walker Britsch followed with a walk. Austin Ferguson advanced the runners to second and third with a ground out. Caleb Geary followed with a sacrifice fly to score DeMott, then Taylor Winkler doubled to score Britsch.
Sidney threatened in the top of the second but left the bases loaded without scoring.
Gering added another unearned run in the second. Nick Ferreyra scored a two-out run after Sidney committed two straight errors to keep the inning alive.
It was a game of miscues. Sidney committed seven on the night and Gering had eight. Four of the errors came in the top of the third when Sidney broke through for five runs. They also had five hits, but only one of the runs scored off Elijah Timblin was earned.
After a scoreless fourth inning both teams added two runs to their totals in the fifth. Again, Sidney benefited from two Gering errors to score unearned runs. Sidney returned the favor in the bottom half of the inning as two errors led to two unearned runs for PVC.
Sidney put the game away with a single tally in the seventh and three more in the top of the seventh.
Sidney is now 18-8 on the year. Gering dropped to 9-21, suffering its fifth loss in a row. They are back into action Friday with a home game against Ogallala.
