Zephyrs and Express win

Twelve was the lucky number for both the WESTCO Zephyrs and Express Tuesday night at Cleveland Field in Scottsbluff. Both teams scored 12 runs in posting wins against Chadron.

The Express junior team whipped the visitors 12-2, while the Zephyrs downed Chadron 12-6.

The Express, now 27-9 on the season, scored four runs in the first and three more in the second to jump out to a 7-1 lead. The Express had 14 hits, while Jackson Hinze limited Chadron to three in pitching a six inning complete game.

The Express will close their regular season this weekend in tournament play at Laramie. Then comes Area 7 tourney play in North Platte July 20-24. The Express earned the top seed for the tournament.

The Zephyrs exploded for five runs in the bottom of the first inning of their game with Chadron. That helped them hold off the visitors who put five runs on the board through the first three innings.

Mark Moran's crew added two runs in each of the final three innings of play to open up the game. Juan Rios picked up the win for the Zephyrs. He pitched four innings of two-hit scoreless relief and struck out seven. He also had two hits and two rbi to help pace the 32-18 Zephyrs.

WESTCO will be back in action tonight at Cleveland Field hosting Torrington in one nine-inning game at 6 p.m. That will be the KNEB Game of the Week with air time at 5:45 p.m. on KNEB-AM and kneb.com.
