Huskers outlast Valparaiso
Lincoln, Neb. - The Nebraska basketball team fought off a late surge by the Valparaiso Crusaders to hang on for a 50-48 win at the Bob Devaney Sports Center on Thursday night. The Huskers (2-0) outlasted the Crusaders (2-1) in a tight second half, using a pair of late free throws from senior Brandon Ubel to seal the second victory of the Tim Miles era.
The Huskers were led by senior Brandon Ubel, who posted a 17-point effort while adding five rebounds for the Big Red. Junior Ray Gallegos chipped in another 14 on the night, including 4-6 from the three-point line. Dylan Talley led the Huskers in rebounds, pulling down six with four assists.
Valparaiso was paced by Kevin Van Wijke, who posted a 20-point total on the evening alongside six rebounds. Teammate Ryan Broekhoff added eight points and ten rebounds for the Crusaders.
Nebraska will continue play in the Joe Cipriano Classic on Sunday, Nov. 18 as the Big Red welcomes Nebraska-Omaha to the Devaney Center. The game is set for a 2 p.m. CST tip.
