Scottsbluff runs by Gering

The Scottsblufff Bearcats rushed for nearly 300-yards as they ran past Gering 42-12 Friday night at Bearcat Stadium.

It was the B8 District opener for both teams as Scottsbluff moved to 5-2 on the year and Gering dropped to 2-5.

Gering got the ball first in the game but went three and out and Scottsbluff took control early. They marched 51-yards in nine plays and scored on a Jackson Hinze eight yard run. Hinze added the extra point and the Cats lead 7-0 with 9:12 to go in the opening quarter.

Another three and out followed for the Bulldogs and once again Scottsbluff started with good field position, at the Gering 49. This time the Bearcats had a 10-play scoring drive capped by a Ty Benson 11-yard touchdown run. It was the first of three scores for the junior running back. He also finished with 165-yards rushing on 19 carries.

Gering battled back on its next possession. Ryan Schwartkopf began a spectacular night for the Bulldogs with a 30-yard kickoff return. That set up a 66-yard scoring drive that Gering capped in the second quarter with a one-yard run by quarterback Dillon DeMott. The score at the 6:01 mark of the second quarter completed a drive that took 8:52 off the clock.

Scottsbluff answered with a eight play 64-yard drive on the ensuing kickoff. With 2:45 to go in the first half the Bearcats went up again by two scores with a 13-yard touchdown run by Benson.

Undaunted, Gering came right back with a nine play 60-yard drive of their own that netted the Bulldogs three points with :14 to go in the first half with a 27-yard field goal from Gage Smith. DeMott, who passed for 134-yards on the night, connected twice in the drive with Schwartzkopf for 39-yards. On the night Schwartzkopf caught six passes for 98-yards.

Ray Cerda opened the second half for Scottsbluff with a 37-yard kickoff return that set up the Bearcats with a short field again. They capped a four play, 49-yard touchdown drive with a seven yard run by Stetson Anderson, who scored the first of his two touchdowns.

The Scottsbluff defense set up the teams next score after an interception by Tristian Donelson. The Bearcats turned it into a 10-play, 39-yard touchdown drive, capped by Anderson's eight yard touchdown run.

Scottsbluff lead 35-9 after three quarters and each team added a score in the fourth. The Bearcats forced a Gering fumble at the Bulldog 31. Benson scored seven plays later from 11-yards out.

Gering finished up the scoring with another 27-yard field goal from Smith.

Both teams have homecoming games next week as Scottsbluff hosts Alliance and Gering entertains Sidney. Sidney won a wild one at Alliance Friday, 52-45.

Benson won the KNEB Taco John's Player of the Game. DeMott and Schwartzkopf shared the same honor for Gering.
