Gering's Mike Smith honored
Gering High School's Mike Smith has been selected as the Official of the year by the Western Nebraska Wrestling Officials Association.
Smith, a math instructor at GHS, will retire from teaching and coaching at the end of this school year but says he will continue to officiate.
Smith, a Gering High School graduate, began his teaching and coaching career in 1970 at Mitchell. He has been at Gering since 1975.
He got his first taste of officiating in 1970 when Mitchell had a dual with Banner County and the scheduled official didn't show up. He got a second opportunity to fill-in at a Torrington-Bridgeport dual and he has been officiating ever since.
He was the Nebraska Wrestling Official of the Year in 1991 and is a member of the Nebraska Wrestling Hall of Fame.
Smith, who wrestled for Nebraska in for a while in college and graduated from Chadron State, will be honored at a banquet in Kearney March 23.
