Gering wins; WESTCO season over
A three game losing streak to Beatrice came to an end for the Gering Platte Valley Companies senior legion baseball team Sunday, and the streak ended at an opportune time, in second round action of the Class B State Tournament at Wahoo.
Gering blanked their nemesis 7-0 behind the three-hit pitching of Grant Rimington. Rimington struck out seven while cruising to the win.
Gering had two big innings in support of Rimington. They scored four runs in the third inning an added three more in the fifth.
Danny O'Boyle led the way at the plate with three hits. Zach Smith added three rbi.
Gering picked up its 28th win of the season. They have outscored their two state tournament foes 15-2.
Meanwhile the WESTCO Zephyrs had their Class A State Tournament in Kearney end in two games following a 15-1 setback to Grand Island Home Federal Sunday. WESTCO was outscored 26-3 in its two tournament losses.
Joe Sanchez suffered the loss for the Zephyrs, who end their season at 37-23. Home Federal scored three runs in the second inning an added six more in the third to go up 9-0. A five spot in the top of the eighth ended the game an inning early.
The Zephyrs, making their second straight trip to state, were held to four hits.
