Ranta leads CSC women to win
CHADRON--Senior forward Kattie Ranta continued her exceptional season Friday night by scoring 27 points and grabbing 10 rebounds while leading the Chadron State women's basketball team to a 70-48 victory over Western State.
Ranta sank 12 of 15 field goal shots and three of five free throws. She scored 13 points in the first half and 14 in the second half. The double-double against the Mountaineers was her 13th of the season. The Rapid City Central graduate, who also handed out four assists, is averaging 17.9 points and 9.8 rebounds this season.
Two more Eagles also shot well while scoring in double figures. Senior Kayli Rageth was five of eight from the field, including three of five from 3-point range, and made four of five free throws for 17 points. Junior Dallas Shaw was four of seven from behind the arc for 12 points.
Rageth also had a game-high five assists and Shaw came up with a game-high four steals.
The Eagles shot exactly 50 percent from the field in each half. They were 12 of 24 in the opening half while building a 38-21 lead and were 13 of 26 in the second half. Overall, they were eight of 19 from 3-point range.
Western shot 32.7 percent (17-52) from the field, including two of 14 from long range.
The Eagles' victory avenged the 79-77 loss they sustained at Western on Dec. 7.
Cara Walderman, a 5-11 senior, paced the Mountaineers with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Junior Jade McIntosh added 11 points.
Chadron State is now 4-16 for the season and 4-12 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Western is 5-16 and 5-11.
The Eagles will be at home again tonight to meet Colorado Mesa at 5:30.
