Gering holds off Scottsbluff in softball

It wasn't pretty, but Gering picked up its fourth win in as many tries against the Scottsbluff softball team Thursday night at the Carpenter Center in Terrytown.

Gering jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings, and withstood a four run Scottsbluff third inning that cut the lead down to 6-4, on the way to a 12-4 five inning win.

Senior Jennifer Barge, who has four no-hitters this year for Gering, fired a one-hitter Thursday, but control problems had her in constant trouble.

She walked 10 Bearcat batters including four in the third inning when Scottsbluff Taco John's Player-of-the-Game Betsy Holscher cleared the bases with a triple. That made the score 6-4, but Gering answered the challenge with a two run fourth and a game ending four run fifth.

A two-run triple by Gering catcher Jessica Rogers ended the contest. The sophomore knocked in three runs on the night. Shortstop Brooke Satur added a two run single in the first inning. Isabell Thompson, Aubrey Gonzales,Brooke Doggett and Maggie Martin also had run scoring hits for Gering, which had 12 total hits for the game.

Thompson, was named the Gering Taco John's Player-of-the-Game. She reached base three times with two doubles and a walk. She scored two runs and also ended a Scottsbluff threat in second with a nice running catch in centerfield. Barge had walked the bases loaded and with two outs Bearcat leadoff hitter Natalie Wooden lofted a long fly ball to center that Thompson ran down.

The win moved Gering to 16-2 on the year. Scottsbluff dropped to 9-9. Both teams will participate in the North Platte Invitational this weekend.
